Course aims

The aim of the course is to introduce you to the range of statistical methods used in the academic study of management. This course covers a number of statistical methods that you may need to apply in order to analyse and present quantitative data in your dissertations.

Course objectives

By the end of this course, you should be able to:

  • demonstrate an awareness of the quantitative methods of management research using statistical modes of analysis, in particular use of existing archival data, survey, questionnaire;
  • use IBM SPSS software to conduct a statistical analysis of data and to test hypotheses;
  • select appropriate methods of data collection and analysis;
  • interpret the results of data analysis, and understand the strengths and weaknesses of different methods.


The following key skills are explicitly developed:

  • establish and organise a quantitative dataset;
  • undertaking statistical analysis using IBM SPSS;
  • reporting and interpreting the results in an appropriate manner.
