Peer Learning

Peer Leaders are a really important part of the Business School support that is offered to our undergraduate students. Peer Leaders are 2nd and final year students who are employed by the Business School to help our first years with their transition to university. It is their role to facilitate your first semester learning, help you get to grips with university life and answer any questions you may have.

Watch this video to hear from Business School students and learn more about Peer Learning!

The peer learning sessions are designed and run by our Peer Leaders, collaborating with you and staff to ensure the sessions are useful, informative but also fun and informal.

They are weekly, timetabled sessions which are student led. This means that you, along with the rest of the group, can decide what you cover in your Peer Learning sessions! It could be anything from housing, to getting a job as a student, to other things like referencing, academic writing or even exploring a challenging concept being taught in your lectures.

You will explore these areas with older students who have already been there and done it, and can guide you through settling into life at university using their own experience and tips to help, from the perspective of someone who understands.

Have you met your Peer Leader yet? Find a list of their profiles here to find out more about them.

Peer Learning sessions run throughout the first semester and you’ll see these on your timetable.

“I had an absolute amazing time and met one of my best friends through peer learning session in my first year. Peer leaders did not only help me in term of academic stuff, but also the life outside the university such as houses and employability”

Peer Leader – 2024

“In my first year I particularly struggled with settling down into University life and engaging with my course. Hence, a key motivation for me to be a peer leader is so that I can offer myself as a point of contact for first years if have any queries on how to adapt to University life and ways in which they could develop good studying routines.”

What’s the difference between my Peer Leader and my Personal Academic Tutor?

Peer Leaders are here to answer questions that you may not want to ask a member of staff. They are not here to give you academic advice or guidance, they are also not trained counsellors. They can signpost you to the right place to get help and often that may well be your Personal Academic Tutor. Above all, Peer Leaders are a friendly face for you to chat to while you get used to living and studying at the University of Southampton.
